I hear him chuckle periodically at O'Brien's turn of phrase. I have now 'read' the books at least 15 times through and listened countless times... If you have not heard the excellent readings of these books by Patrick Tull, do yourself a favor and get them IMMEDIATELY! The reader MUST be Patrick Tull, you will not be disappointed. He may have been the finest reader ever.

I picked this up from the Book "Patrick O'Brian's Navy":

"It starts out with a point first made by author Ken Ringle, that there are six great literary themes; Man against Fate, Man against Nature, Man against Man, Man against Woman, Man against Society and Man against himself, and that O'Brian deals with all of these themes in each of the 20 novels." Spot on.

You will note that O'Brian named the Ringle, Jack's tender that he won from his friend Dundas in a game of backgammon, after that reviewer.

Cap'n Jan

Now I need to go read the REST of your blog - that I just found!
Cap'n Janhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13643165126060623120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811678842283038962.post-22291566591461146052014-09-13T18:40:22.275+01:002014-09-13T18:40:22.275+01:00I found the series a bit ago and can't stop re...I found the series a bit ago and can't stop reading, currently on The Nutmeg of Consolation.
